Caring for Downriver.

Jaime cares about you.

Dear Neighbor,

I’m Jaime Churches and I am running to be your State Representative for Downriver. District 27 includes: Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Trenton, Riverview, Wyandotte, and part of Southgate. The general election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

I taught 5th grade Downriver for ten and a half years. I have had the pleasure to student teach for Gibraltar schools. Then, I began my teaching career in Woodhaven-Brownstown where I taught for 6 years. Then, I had the opportunity to work for Grosse Ile Township schools the district I graduated from and I have been teaching for them for the past four years. I also served as my local MEA Vice President.

I grew up Downriver, attended Woodhaven-Brownstown and Grosse Ile public schools, and I’m inspired to serve the community that raised me. I am the daughter of a nurse and a businessman. Also, the sister of an autoworker. I know the challenges facing our community because I’ve lived them.

For me, politics are personal. As a teacher, I have had to teach with limited curricular resources due to lack of funding. I have spent my own money to fund learning experiences for my students. I know many of my fellow educators do the same. I have seen how the government’s lack of investment has devalued the educational profession. I am tired of Lansing making choices at the expense of our students and on the backs of our teachers. I want to promote a culture of support for the field of education where teachers feel valued and respected for the hard work they do everyday for our kids.

Legislation has the power to impact our businesses, classrooms, health systems, our environment, and most importantly- the people of Downriver. I will work to prioritize working families. I believe we need to make politics and policy more accessible. We need to make sure everyday working families are provided the support and opportunities they deserve to get ahead.

As your State Representative I have had the honor of serving Downriver. Since arriving in office in January 2023 we have accomplished many of the goals that we set out to do. Some of our accomplishments include;

  • Secured $20 Million for Grosse Ile Free Bridge Repairs

  • Secured $400,000 for Gibraltar’s lead line service replacements

  • Secured $20 Million for railroad crossing replacement in Trenton

  • Secured $10 Million for Downriver Career Tech Consortium

  • Secured $10 Million for Downriver Utility Wastewater Authority

  • Passing the Clean Energy and Jobs Act

  • Reinstating workers’ rights and prevailing wages

  • Repealed the pension tax on our seniors

  • Expanded the working families tax credit

  • Amended the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include LGBTQ+ Michiganders

  • Repealed the outdated 1931 abortion ban that made abortions a felony
    Reinstated Michigan’s prevailing wage law

  • Required universal background checks for all firearm purchases

  • Require safe storage of firearms around children

  • Repealed the mandatory retention law that held back Michigan’s 3rd graders

I believe in the power of community. Working together makes a difference.  I fight fiercely and unapologetically for the things that I love- Downriver has my heart. As your next State Representative, I will work hard everyday to make a difference for you and your family.

I am accessible to all members in our community. I encourage you to reach out to me anytime to share your perspective.
